When computer-generated images are displayed on interlaced video devices such as televisions and VCRs, flicker results. Rapid transitions in color or thin (one-pixel) lines appear to flash when displayed on these devices. Convolution is a mathematical process in which the image that is displayed is averaged between lines, significantly reducing this flicker.

While previous implementations of convolution have been expensive, Apple Convolution was designed into the Macintosh Display Card 4‚Ä¢8 and Macintosh Display Card 8‚Ä¢24, thus reducing the cost of this functionality. Apple Convolution is available for interlaced video displays at up to 8 bits per pixel (256 colors).
